Nine Twenty are supporting in their growth and development in the recruitment of a variety of roles.

We recently interviewed Jackie McGhee, to hear more about life at BlackArrow Financial Solutions and why people should be very interested in working with the company.

Can you tell us a little about your background, and how you came to join BlackArrow Financial Solutions?
I've been working on the web since 1999, starting off purely as a designer before getting interested in web applications. My work has taken me through many sectors: performance management, healthcare, civil engineering, investment banking and Fintech.

I found BlackArrow coincidentally just as I was moving on from another role and the combination of the company's aims of customer empowerment plus the start-up approach (which I love) led me to pursure the role. After meeting with David, our CTO, I knew this is where I wanted to work.

What does your role in the business entail?
My main responsibilities centre around our user-facing applications from the design and development of the user interface, the server components and designing data contracts with other teams. I'm very fortunate in that I get to be a decision maker when it comes to tools and approaches.

How are you enjoying life at BlackArrow Financial Solutions so far?
I joined BlackArrow at the start of February 2020, just a few weeks before Covid-19 enforced a massive change in the way we worked, going from office-based to largely remote. Thankfully, BlackArrow has adjusted well to remote working and understands that you can't simply transfer the way of working that suits the office to one's home. If anything, I think that lockdown and BlackArrow's approach to it has increased trust among the team and the company as a whole.
Can you tell us what you are working on at the moment?
I'm currently leading a project which will help advisors and brokers nurture people looking for a mortgage to purchase a home that meets their property goals. It's companion piece to another of our products that helps people gain deeper insight into their own financial position and how that compares to their goal.
How do you envisage the team growing over the next couple of months?
Our main drivers for the short to medium term are data and Devops. I hope to be welcoming new colleagues that can really shine when it comes to API delivery, infrastructure and machine learning.
What sort of candidates are you looking for to join the team?
At the moment, we are looking for people comfortable working in a distributed team who are not averse to helping outside their nominal role when required. People who understand the difference between working in a rapidly-growing start-up and more rigid, inflexible institutions. We're looking for people who are capable, curious and confident without being arrogant.
What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?
When my working day is done, I like a mix. It's important to know when to switch off work, especially when working remotely. I make sure to spend time every day relaxing with my partner. I also play bass, often too loudly.
