Nine Twenty recently helped Trtl find their new Director of International Retail Sales (Luke Gorringe), and this week we caught up with him to see how he is settling in.

Can you tell us a little about your background, and how you came to join Trtl?

I have had a very varied background working in several industries from sales in Oil & Gas, Marketing, operations in domestic retail and then in travel retail, eventually running entire duty free businesses in India and Indonesia. I have been fortunate enough to live and work in some amazing places such as Portugal, the US, India (twice) and Indonesia. In Joining Trtl, I was not only looking for a role with a supplier to travel retail but specifically one where the business has little or no footprint in travel retail. The challenge would then be to take the brand to the top level within the category, globally. I can then say “I did that”! At Trtl, I have found that not only are the products significantly better than the competition, but the team here are highly capable, enthusiastic, aspirational and motivated. My kind of people!


What does your role in the business entail?

 A BIG challenge! I will be focusing on taking our products to market within travel and domestic retail. Given my experience in airport retailing, I will have a big focus on delivering listings with all global airport retail operators. It won’t be just selling our portfolio to retailers but the category is mature and so I will need to taking our brand values and aspirations to the table as well. I need to display that Trtl is not just better than the competition, but we are as a team and brand, in it for the long haul and continually evolving, reinventing and disruptive!


How are you settling into life at Trtl?

All is well. It hasn’t been long and although my role is remote based, I have been and will be spending a lot of time here in Glasgow. The main purpose of this is to initially immerse myself into the team and brand and take those learnings away to the negotiating table. It’s quite contagious actually – I am already finding myself talking Trtl….


What sort of people are you looking for to join your team in the future?

Within the retail team, we do need to have complimenting skill sets and personalities. First and foremost, I will be looking for people who have the ability to walk and talk Trtl and to be able to fit in with our culture. We are on a steep learning curve and will need people who are progressive and adaptable. We don’t necessarily have rules of play and so we will need creative minds and problem solvers.


What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?

When there is not a Formula 1 race or a big boxing bout on the TV, I’ll devote the majority of my time to my family. As a family, we talk a lot about what we have seen and learned about during our travels and we are always planning the next learning experience – my wife is an educator and it’s in her nature to make sure we are always learning! I enjoy cooking and normally take the lead there. When weather permits, I’ll put my running shoes on and when there is time, I’ll try to fit in a game of squash. I nearly forgot to mention that I also like to socialize over a pint as well!
