We meet McDermott Group's Jamie McLaughlin

 21st Oct 2019

We’ve recently been working with McDermott Group on an extensive recruitment campaign and have been catching up with their team on what life is like working in the growing business. This week we spoke to Development Team Lead Jamie McLaughlin.

Jamie McLaughlin - McDermott Group

Can you tell us a little about your background, and how you came to join McDermott Group?

I’ve worked around a few different companies in the data world and came to join McDermott Group (MG) as a development team lead, with a focus on data processes and IoT. I have experience of leading data teams in past roles, and the opportunity to do so in an industry that has masses of room to excel in the technical space seemed like a great opportunity to get stuck into.

What does your role in the business entail?

As development team lead, I oversee a software development team and try to manage the balance between greenfield development and the organisation and improvement of legacy software. On top of that, I’m involved in the whole data pipeline for MG – since that’s primarily where my experience is!

How are you enjoying life at McDermott Group so far?

It’s ace! The day-to-day is pretty well resourced on various levels (equipment, facilities, etc) and the people are good fun to work with. We’ve got the opportunity to be building our team a bit at the moment, and the process of feeling out the technical skills people bring to the table as well as their social place within the team is really good fun – I’m excited about the potential at MG.

Can you tell us what you are working on at the moment?

Everything! We’re setting some strategy for the year ahead just now, so I’m doing what I can to feed into that while also trying to organise and develop our reporting processes. I’m also reading like a maniac to get myself into a position where I understand the industry, the previous journey of MG, and to position myself to make good suggestions on what might be our future use of information.

How do you envisage the team growing over the next couple of months?

It looks like it’s going to be a really quick run up to Christmas – we’ve already added some talented people since I started and there’s a lot more to come. Some of the greenfield projects that are coming up will require loads and loads of resource, so there’s enough work for a few teams coming up – never mind the legacy stuff as well!

What sort of candidates are you looking for to join the team?

People who are growth-minded and who want to be part of a close-knit, social team. We want candidates who have good, applied experience of the technologies we’re using, but the priority is definitely ensuring that they’re willing to step totally outside their current knowledge and acquire new, different skills that are beneficial to our end goals.

What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?

I used to play (and now coach) American football. Otherwise, I tend to be quite restless and I like fidgeting with things, so I’ll usually be found trying to teach myself stuff – software, woodworking, music recording, DIY, guitar; it’s a long list of things I’m usually not very good at!!
